Soy is a non-meat source of protein which is grown mainly in the American Mid-west and soybeans are full of nutrients such as protein, B-vitamins, magnesium, potassium, iron and calcium.
Researchers investigating the benefits of soy have also found that soybeans, have compounds called isoflavones, which may lower the risk of heart disease and may strengthen bones, reduce the risk of cancer and ease the symtoms of the menopause. In America the research information has been so compelling that the Food and Drug Administration has approved the use of food labeling which includes linking use of soy and a reduction in heart disease risk.
So a gradual change of diet to include some servings of soy in meals each day could help to improve your health!
- Soy Beanuts
There are many ways that you can ease soy products into your diet. We keep roasted beanuts on hand as a snack. They can take the place of peanuts, and can give a lovely treat to those who may be sensitive to peanuts or have a peanut allergy. By themselves or mixed with raisins, they make for a tasty and nutritious treat. You can also use them in place of peanuts in recipes.
Roasted beanuts come in a variety of flavors -- Salted, Unsalted, Jalapeno Cheddar, Ranch, Barbecue, jerky, Garlic Onion, Harvest Mixture -- so there's one for everybody's taste!
- Soy Milk
Soymilk may be used in place of milk in recipes, such as puddings, cakes and cream pies, but the easiest way to sneak it in on a regular basis is to add it to cereal and coffee. Try a half-milk/half soymilk mixture at first. You can now buy soymilk fortified with calcium and vitamin D so that you don't miss out on necessary nutrients in standard milk products.
- Soy Creamer
You can use this in place of cream in soups, sauces, etc.
- Soy As A Meat substitute
Textured vegetable protein, or TVP, is a soy derivative that is gaining popularity as a meat substitute. Available in dehydrated form and in a variety of shapes and textures, Soy Chunks and Mince provide an easy and inexpensive way to stretch your meat and lower the fat content of meals. Use it in place of half, or more, of the ground meat in recipes such as meatballs, meatloaf, chili, Sloppy Joes and tacos. Your family will never know the difference but you will, as you save money compared to some meats and improve your family's health.
- Soy Protein Powders
